Reusing materials published by other publishers
Authors must seek permission to reuse any published content (e.g., figures, charts, tables, or text) if they do not own the copyright. This permission usually needs to be obtained from the copyright holder, typically the publisher. Authorization is necessary in the following cases:
- Authors' works that other publishers published without retaining copyright.
- Significant excerpts from works or series of works by others.
- Use of unmodified or slightly modified tables, graphs, charts, or artwork.
- Images that do not own the copyright.
Authorization is not required in the following cases:
1. Reconstructing tables using previously published data, with proper indication of the data source.
2. Fair use, such as short quotations.
3. Graphs, charts, or artwork that have been completely reconstructed and changed beyond recognition by the authors.
Obtaining Authorization
To avoid delays in publication, authors must obtain authorization from the copyright owner when required. This authorization should be indicated in the manner specified by the copyright owner. If not specified, authors can use the following format: "Copy authorized by [author], [title of book/journal]; Published by [publisher], [year]" at the end of the table, figure, or chart caption.
